The woman’s offspring

(Gen. 3:6-21)

Introduction: Two weeks ago, I preached with the title of ‘The Creation’ based on Gen. 1:1-8. The main agent of the Creation is the Trinity God. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit worked together when the God created this universe. When the Elohim God created the universe, He revealed His eternal ability and divine characters in nature. If we carefully watch nature, we can see God’s divine characters. However, this first Creation is not eternal. When Jesus comes to this world for the second time, the current Creation will disappear and the new earth and the new heaven will come down from the sky. The only condition to enter the new heaven and the new earth is to receive Jesus in our heart. I also talked about the possibility of re-creation of the universe and the meaning of one day. Today’s passage is Gen. 3:6-21. The first gospel is recorded here. Through today’s passage we will learn the Fall of mankind, the separation of humans from God, Humans’ excuses, God’s punishments, and the gospel hidden in the passage.

1) The Fall of mankind (6-7): God created a man and a woman, let them take care of the Garden of Eden, and gave them a clear and simple command. They should not eat the fruit of good and evil. If they do, they will surely die (Gen. 2:15-17). But, when the woman saw the fruit with the temptation of the serpent, the fruit looked good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So, she ignored God’s command and ate the fruit. Then, she gave the fruit to Adam, and Adam also ate the fruit. That was the moment of human corruption and the beginning of human tragedy. The woman first ate the fruit, but Adam was responsible for her sin because Adam was the image and shadow of the Christ (Rom. 5:14).

2) The results of the Fall, separation and excuses (8-13): The corrupted humans hid themselves from God and made coverings with the fig tree leaves. Sin makes humans to be separated from God, which is death. Separation means death. The first death is the separation of our spirit from our flesh, and the second and permanent death is the separation of our souls from God. Then God came to Adam to save him. But, when God asked Adam about what he did, Adam made excuses and blamed God for making a woman for him. When God asked the woman, she blamed the serpent. I am wondering what would happen if Adam had confessed his sin and asked God for forgiveness. God would forgive him and show him the way to be saved. But the corrupted man was separated from God and made excuses for his sin.

3) The woman’s offspring (14-21): While God was punishing the corrupted human beings, He suddenly gave them the promise for the woman’s offspring who would destroy the Satan’s head. We also see about the same message from Isa. 7:14 and Gal. 4:4 about the birth of Jesus from a virgin. All human beings born from man are sinners. The only person who was born from a woman, Jesus, is free from sins. Jesus was born by Virgin Mary through the Holy Spirit. As the results of Adam’s sin, the woman received a greatly increased pain for childbearing and childbirth, and she should be ruled by her husband. Because of Adam’s sin, the earth was also cursed, and Adam should painfully work to eat for all his life. Finally, because of Adam’s sin, all human beings should eventually go back to the earth. For dust we are and to dust we will return. The only way we will be saved from the death is to receive Jesus in our heart. Anyone who hears the word of Jesus and believes in God who sent Jesus will receive eternal life and will not be condemned because he has crossed over from death to life (John 5:24). This is the gospel of Christ who came to this world as the woman’s offspring. Thank you and God bless you.
